Britain is bracing for more snow as gas supplies hit concerningly low levels, raising worries about heating and energy needs this winter
Since January 9, our gas supplies have dropped by 26% compared to last year. That’s not great news. Chris O’Shea from Centrica, which owns British Gas, said our reserves are “concerningly low.”
He pointed out that we’re lagging behind Europe when it comes to energy storage. We really need to invest in that. It’s like having insurance for when the weather turns nasty.
With temperatures dipping below -10C recently, folks have been cranking up the heat. And now, with more arctic weather on the horizon, we might be in for a rough ride.
The Met Office is predicting thick snow, and some areas could see up to 2cm of snow per hour. Northern England, especially places like Newcastle and the Yorkshire Dales, might get hit the hardest.
Despite the low gas levels, some suppliers are staying optimistic. National Gas claims supplies are still “healthy” and that we’re in a good spot to handle winter.
But let’s be real, the UK has one of the smallest gas storage capacities in Europe. We can only store enough for about 12 average days. That’s a bit worrying, don’t you think?
