Exciting news! A public toilet block in Derbyshire will reopen after seven years, addressing local needs and enhancing visitor experience.
The council is spending £8,000 to get the toilets back in shape. They’re also planning to build a new accessible toilet at Ashbourne Recreation Ground. Plus, they’ll hire someone to keep the facilities clean.
Originally, the toilet block was closed to help fix a big budget gap. But in 2021, a local brewery even used the space to brew beer! That lease is ending soon, so now’s the time to bring back the toilets.
A temporary toilet was set up last September because of complaints about people using the bushes. The council noticed more complaints during the busy Matlock Bath Illuminations event. They’re hoping the reopening will help with that.
The plan is to have the toilets open from March to October, just in time for the tourist season. They’re also working on a deal for public access to toilets at the Whitworth Centre, which is a nice backup.
A petition with 4,000 signatures pushed for the reopening, showing how much the community wants it. While the council is considering options, they’re not ready to fully reopen just yet. But they’re looking into future possibilities, which is a step in the right direction!
