Rapper Tataloo faces death penalty in Iran after blasphemy conviction, raising concerns over freedom of expression and human rights.
Tataloo, known for his extensive tattoos, had previously escaped to Istanbul in 2018. However, he was returned to Iran by Turkish police in December 2023. Before this, he had already faced a five-year prison sentence for similar charges.
The rapper has also been in trouble for promoting “prostitution” and spreading “propaganda” against the Iranian government. His music has often been used by conservative politicians to connect with younger audiences.
Despite the harsh sentence, there’s a chance for appeal, as reported by the Guardian. Tataloo made waves in the music industry, being the first Iranian artist to collaborate with Universal Music Group in 2021.
Iran has a notorious reputation for executions, with over 850 people executed in 2023 alone. The situation raises serious concerns about human rights and freedom of expression in the country.
