Major Supermarket to Shut All Cafes and Pizza Counters, Lay Off 3,000 Staff

London: Sainsbury’s is making some big changes. They’re shutting down all 61 of their own-brand cafes and pizza counters. This move will impact around 3,000 employees.

The company says it wants to make room for more fresh food options. They believe most of their loyal customers don’t use the cafes much anyway. Instead, they’ll keep food halls run by other brands like Five Guys and Carluccio’s.

Sainsbury’s plans to roll out new bakery recipes and self-serve bread slicing by summer. They’re also offering a support package for affected staff that goes beyond what’s legally required.

The CEO, Simon Roberts, mentioned that these decisions are tough but necessary. They aim to keep improving their food offerings while navigating a challenging cost environment. It’s all part of their Next Level Strategy to make good food accessible for everyone.
