If you’ve been diagnosed with certain cancers, you might be eligible for significant compensation from the DWP
These payments are for individuals who haven’t received compensation yet. To qualify, you must have been exposed to asbestos in the UK and diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Even if you were exposed through a family member, you can still apply. Just remember, you need to apply within 12 months of your diagnosis.
Your age at diagnosis matters too. If you were diagnosed before 2012, you can claim under the 2008 scheme. This scheme offers a one-time payment if you haven’t received compensation from other sources.
For example, if you were 37 or younger at diagnosis, you could get around £114,210. But if you were over 77, it drops to about £17,745.
Dependents of those who have passed away from mesothelioma can also claim, but the amounts are smaller. Claims must be made within a year of death.
If you were diagnosed after July 25, 2012, or can’t find the employer responsible, you’ll need to go through the DMPS.
You can still claim from DMPS even if you’ve claimed from the 2008 scheme, but it might affect your payout.
For those diagnosed between 2012 and 2015, payouts can reach up to £216,896 for younger claimants. After 2015, the amounts are even higher, with up to £271,120 for those 40 and under.
