New statistics reveal Derbyshire has the highest rate of sex offenders in the East Midlands, raising concerns about public safety.
Derbyshire: Recent data shows a troubling trend. It turns out Derbyshire has the highest number of sex offenders in the East Midlands. The numbers are pretty shocking.
Across the UK, registered sex offenders have nearly doubled in 13 years. By March 2024, there were over 70,000 offenders in England and Wales. That’s one for every 763 people aged 10 and up.
Compared to last year, the numbers have gone up by 2.5%. It’s the highest count we’ve ever seen. Back in 2010, there were only about 36,000 registered offenders.
The Ministry of Justice tracks these offenders through a program called MAPPA. This helps keep tabs on them and prevent more crimes. Offenders must inform the police about their details and any changes.
Some areas have more offenders than others. For instance, County Durham has a high concentration, with 196 offenders for every 100,000 people. That’s one for every 510 people aged 10 and older.
In South Wales, Gwent has 991 offenders, which is one for every 532 people. Meanwhile, places like Hertfordshire have the lowest ratio, with one for every 1,266 people.
In the East Midlands, Derbyshire stands out with one offender for every 714 people. That totals 1,338 offenders. Nottinghamshire follows closely with one for every 735 people.
Lincolnshire has one for every 763, while Leicestershire has the lowest ratio in the region, with one for every 877 people.
