Derby’s council leader shares updates on the Market Place project, aiming for a vibrant city center soon
There are a few steps left before they can start tearing it down. Originally, they planned to begin in late autumn. But some planning issues and uncertainty about what will replace it delayed things.
The council hopes this delay will allow for quick construction afterward, so the site won’t sit empty for too long. They want to create new public spaces, offices, and even a four-star hotel to give Derby a fresh cultural vibe.
Last week, there was a meeting to discuss the Market Place plans, but technical issues prevented it from being streamed live on YouTube. The council was asked for an update due to these problems.
Peatfield mentioned that they’ve been working closely with their development partners, VINCI UK and ION Developments, to finalize the proposals. They’re eager to consult with residents soon.
At the meeting, Conservative councillor Matthew Holmes encouraged more engagement with the public as they move forward. He mentioned plans for public consultations and workshops to keep everyone in the loop.
Peatfield has been cautious about giving a timeline for the demolition. She wants to avoid raising false hopes but is eager to see the Assembly Rooms gone as soon as possible.
