Derby: A car park in Derby is being eyed as a potential spot for the new Great British Railways headquarters. Planning documents reveal that the owner wants to keep it running as a car park for at least two more years.

This car park is right by the Pride Park entrance of Derby Midland Station. It’s been in use for years and even serves Derby County match days. The owner has been trying to find a long-term tenant for over 16 years.

In 2023, Derby was chosen to host the new GBR organization. This body will manage train services across the UK, including schedules and ticket prices.

Last year, the GBR transition team set up temporary offices while searching for a permanent home. So far, no final location has been announced.

A spokesperson from Derby City Council mentioned they’re working closely with the GBR team to help find the best spot for the headquarters.

Other locations being considered include RTC Derby, Becketwell in the city center, and Midland House near the station.

The planning documents submitted this week show the car park has been on the market for over a decade. They note that economic challenges make redevelopment tough.

The plan is to keep the car park running for another two years while exploring permanent options. It’s being promoted as a strategic site for the GBR headquarters.

The statement highlights that the site is a possible location for the new GBR HQ and will be marketed as such.

The income from parking helps cover costs and promotes the site for future employment use. The planning statement emphasizes that keeping the car park open is crucial during these uncertain economic times.

This comes as the council recently held a public consultation on plans to revamp the “Station Quarter” of Derby, aiming to transform both sides of the station.

A recent masterplan image from the Labour-led council shows a modern vision for the area, including a new walkway, updated station entrance, apartments, office space, and a multi-storey car park on the Pride Park side.
